Tea, anyone?

As you may know, I (along with my parents) own a website.

And this week, we’ve got a little write-up over at Musings of a Housewife.

And a giveaway, too.

Check it out.

And don’t forget to leave a comment to enter.  Drawing Friday.

Project Hope

In case you ever wondered, my blog title is a line stolen from Louisa May Alcott.  In Little Women, Jo March ponders her direction in life and says “I fear I am hopelessly flawed.”

I love Ms. Alcott, I love Little Women, and I simply adore Jo March.  I connect with her.  As a girl, I, too, struggled with feeling I didn’t fit in anywhere, and didn’t know where I was headed.  I, too, was a tomboy.  I, too, was (am) a writer.

And I, too, am Hopelessly Flawed.

An imperfect specimen.

But my Redeemer is perfect, and it is through Him that I have hope.

Generally, I try to stay on neutral ground here.  I have strong beliefs, but I don’t want to alienate anyone.  I am not ashamed!  But I cannot share anything if I chase someone away, either.  So mostly I try not to put my beliefs ‘out there’ in a way that would be a turn off, but occasionally I do have to fly my Jesus flag.

Something has been on my heart for a while now, and it’s time to put my money where my mouth is.  Find a need and fill it.

You may have noticed the button to the right over there.  [Feel free to snag, please, if you'd like to help spread the word.]

The idea is simple – no pressure, no preaching, just a book.  I’m offering to send a Bible to anyone who would like one but cannot afford it.

You can click the logo above to read more about the Project (or there is a link in my header), and if you feel led to pray for it, I would appreciate that as well.

Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss!

Today was a great day in the history of children’s literature.  Namely, the most influential children’s author of all time, Theodor Geisel, was born on March 2, 1904.

Celebrate the day!

“From there to here, and here to there, funny things are everywhere.”

Check out this page with lots of great resources for Dr. Seuss fun, including games, crafts, and assorted printables.

Of course you’ll need to read a silly book or two.

And after the kids go to bed, you might want to keep reading.  He is, in my humble opinion, one of the best philosophers of our time.  Practical and to-the-point in a fun way, but the fluff never detracts from the weight of his message.

“It’s a troublesome world. All the people who’re in it
are troubled with troubles almost every minute.
You ought to be thankful, a whole heaping lot,
for the places and people you’re lucky you’re not.”

“I know up on the top you are seeing great sights, but down at the bottom we, too, should have rights.”

“Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.”

And of course the entire book Oh! The Places You’ll Go!

I love Dr. Seuss.

My favorite book of his was actually his first – And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street.  It saddens me every time I meet someone who has never read this book.  Very sadly, for some unknown reason, it never gained the broad appeal of many of his other books.

It’s a wrong I’m going to help to right today, in my own small way.  I’m giving away 2 copies to lucky readers.  Just leave me a comment here and you’re entered!  If you’d like an additional entry (optional) you can tweet/blog/post on Facebook about this giveaway, linking back to this post.  Please leave me a separate comment if you do that so I can be sure you get credit for multiple entries.

Already have this book?  I’d be happy to buy you a different one, or you could donate to your child’s school or your local library.  In the words of a very wise man,

“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.”

Thank you, Dr. Seuss, for inspiring very many children to go to very many places.

A little of this, a little of that

Little bits of randomness that I’ve been thinking about, but none are worthy of long enough for their own entire post.

  • That killer whale who just killed a trainer at Sea World?  Apparently he’s a serial killer.  Maybe we should stop saving the whales.
  • A couple of weeks ago I won a giveaway over at Cinnamon Hollow for Country Bob’s All-Purpose Sauce.  I’m not generally much of a sauce gal so I had my reservations.  I’d say that it tasted comparable to A-1.  Most attractive to me, however, was this statement in the company literature:  It would be nice if we could claim responsibility for the success of the company, however, credit must be given where credit is due. Proverbs 16:3 says, “Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and your plans will succeed.” We have placed true ownership of Country Bob, Inc. in the hands of God. “Christ is our CEO” and  He is an Awesome Boss! Now that is a company I want to support!

  • Despite how it must look to my readers, I do not have 42 appliance garages or a kitchen the size of a cracker box.  For some reason this just always ends up being my food snapshot locale.
  • I’m on a DIY/go green kick.  To be perfectly honest, it’s more about saving money than saving the environment.  (I’m not even going to go there with my issues on saving the planet)  In that vein, I’ve been using natural products like baking soda, peroxide, and white vinegar to clean, and I’ve been making my own laundry detergent.  Do you have any other tips you could share?
  • I love HGTV.  I’m a DIY kinda gal anyway, and I love real estate so I especially like the house-hunting type shows.  I find myself wanting to shake some of the buyers, though.  Why can they not see past ugly paint colors?  Why are they unwilling to put any work into a place?  Have they no imagination???  This makes me crazy.
  • Chris’s company gives out bonuses at the beginning of the year.  Very sadly, this year not so much.  I, on the other hand, continue to reap bonuses from my job every day.

  • I have the best job in the world.
  • Girl Scout cookies.  Everywhere.  If you need some, please come to my house.  I need them to go away.
  • I don’t think I ever told you this, but I did post it on Twitter/Facebook.  And I told everyone at church, too – because I’m klassy like that.  My parents bought me a leg lamp for Christmas.  You know, the leg lamp.  My husband hates it.  Because he has no sense of humor, and is easily embarrassed by me.  Nonetheless, it did hold the appropriate place of honor in our [front] living room window this past holiday season.  And because I love it so much (and I’m super klassy), it’s still in the living room, though now on a side table instead.

  • When I was a kid we had a neighbor that told my mom she’d always wanted to have a room in her house for all of the things that she knows are tacky, but loves them anyway.  I feel exactly the same way.  Leg lamp would love a room like that, methinks.
  • I’m frustrated with our school’s PTO.  They have zero communication (don’t even announce meetings!), overpriced fundraisers, and are not at all accessible.  I’m writing a letter to suggest some changes, but I am still in need of some GOOD fundraising ideas.  Got any for me?  Overpriced wrapping paper needs to die.

That’s all I’ve got.  It’s not that NaBloPoMo is wearing me down; quite the contrary, actually.  I’ve been surprised that it’s been easier than I anticipated.  It’s just that I am sick – again – still.  My whole body aches, as it has off and on for the last 3 months.  Spring can’t come soon enough.

Super Bowl Sunday

My friend Julie just blogged about how important a witty title is to attract the interest of potential readers.  Clearly, this week I am not trying to attract anyone new.  I’m either writing for current followers or for those who just love the painfully obvious, what with clever titles like ‘Handy Manny Cake’ or ‘Lilly’s First Haircut’ floating about.  Pardon my Super Bowl Sunday thing.  Duh.

A side effect of NaBloPoMo is that my titles suffer.

So aside from the obvious, we’re not doing much.  I’m making some yummy snacks and using the prize pack I won from my friend Mary and Old El Paso.  I’m a big football fan so this Tackle The Taste package is right up my alley, and green chilies – yum.

And the big game, of course.  I’ll be watching here:

No, that’s not a movie theater, or a high school gymnasium.  It’s actually our family room, and my husband’s new, embarrassingly large television.  It’s like 400 inches wide or something, just so that no one has any doubts about who the smart one is in this house.  Me with the books, him with the barcalounger and remote.

You decide.

He ordered the projector from China – bought it on ebay.  It’s apparently 1/20th of the price that way.  I’m a firm believer that you get what you pay for, but him notsomuch.  This contraption arrived Friday evening, and he spent the entire weekend re-arranging, building, re-wiring, mounting, and hanging it all up, just to be ready for game day.

Too bad we don’t care about either team.

But hey, at least I’ll have a comfy spot to eat my chips and guac, right?  And it’s almost as great as being in Miami, since the players will appear pretty much life-sized in front of us.

Not that I’m bitter about the whole big dumb stupid ridiculous absurd tv thing.  Not at all.

Happy game day!

Fa-la-la-la free

I am going to tell you something that will make you pea-green with envy.

I have my Christmas cards done already.

Completely.  Photo taken, design chosen, cards ordered, envelopes stamped – totally ready.  And if you have a calendar handy you might notice that Thanksgiving is still a week away.

Impressive, right?

At least something about me should be super-organized.  Back in my pre-kids days I was always this prompt, but now it’s nothing short of a miracle.

I’m not just bragging though – I’m here to help.

Wanna know the secret for my motivation?

Free. Stuff.

Sucks me in every time.

I got our Christmas cards totally free this year.  And they aren’t chinsy, paper-thin, paint-by-numbers done by a handless artist with their feet, either (anyone else remember those cards?)

These are the real deal, 5×7 glossy photo cards, designed completely by yours truly.  The kind I paid over a hundred dollars for last year.  (I can say this here because my husband doesn’t read my blog.  If he knew how much Christmas cards cost, you’d all be getting an email greeting from us.  He doesn’t love you like I do, friends.)

Wanna hear the best part?  You can get yours free too.

Check this out:

25% off all Photo Cards with Promo Code 'photocard

Use the site to order 50 cards of your choice, 4×8 OR 5×7, and enter promo code ‘newbaby’ at checkout. Voila!  Free cards, AND free shipping.  And they’re fast, too.  I placed my order at 2 am, received shipping notice at 9 am, and the cards arrived via FedEx the next day.  What more could you ask for?

More cards you say?  Ok, I can do that.  You can also use promo code ‘freebies4mom-1109′ for 50 free 4×8 cards.

Want even more?  (Greedy!)

Ok, how about 100 free prints?  If this is your first time using the new Fuji site, you will get a code good for 100 free prints when you place your first order.  And yes, the free cards count as that order!  You’ll have to pony up a couple of bucks for shipping on these, but they’re still a great deal.

Ok, ok – one more thing.  Right after free stuff comes my love of a great sale. Like this one:

11/22-11/23 - 50% Off Sitewide

But pay attention, because that awesome 50% off sale is only good for 2 days, this coming Sunday and Monday.

Now how’s that for an early Christmas present?

You’re welcome.

Oh, and I’d love to share our Christmas card here, but since most of you are probably already on my mailing list, I hate to ruin the surprise.  (Since I know you’re sitting there in suspense, wondering what our Christmas card will be this year.)

*And now the annoying blurb, to keep from going to FCC prison.  Fuji did not ask me to write this, or bribe me, or threaten me with bodily harm.  They did give me free photos, just like they will do for you.  They don’t know I am writing this.  I wrote it just ’cause I’m cool like that, and I like to share a good bargain.  And if you click this link from my site, I will get a huge fat paycheck from Fuji, which will allow my family to take that lavish transatlantic cruise we’ve always dreamed about.  Oh wait, that’s not true.  But I might get a dollar. Which is also cool.

-Some of you are reporting that you’re not receiving free shipping.  I’m really sorry – I don’t know why that would be!  I used code ‘newbaby’ and was not charged a penny.  If the promo has changed I do apologize, but it seems to still be working on my end.  Even if you have to pay shipping, I still think this is a good deal.

Second, note that the free cards promo ends on 11/30, so order soon!

And lastly, Monday 11/23 is your last chance to order photo gifts for 50% off.  Happy shopping!

Frugality via credit card? yup.

First off, thanks so much to Darcie at Such the Spot for referring me to this great promo!

I am a Discover Card holder.  In fact, Discover was the first credit card I ever had.  Got it shortly after getting my own apartment in college, and I had a whopping $500 credit limit.  That was back when $500 seemed like a lot of money.  Now I long for the days of only being indebted for $500…but I digress.

So anyway, Discover Card.  They’ve been great over the years for a lot of reasons.  1 – They were the only credit card accepted at Sam’s Club, which was great for big purchases.  2 – They have great customer service, and have never hiked my interest rate or done anything remotely shady.  I have zero complaints, and I think that’s pretty rare for a credit card company these days.  and 3 – the ShopDiscover program.  This is so. cool.

I was leery at first, because I got a phone call about it, and my natural instinct is to reject and quickly hang up on all calls of that nature. But this actually does save money, and I love me a good bargain. You log into Discover and then click through to a participating retailer, and you get 5-20% cash back.  Two of my faves? Hotwire.com, my absolute favorite place to get rental car deals for Disney, is now participating! And ProFlowers.com is a participating retailer as well, offering 20% back!  They have seriously low flower prices, so low that even a cheapie like me will order from them just for fun, and now I can get 20% back when I do it.  Woot!

If you don’t already have a Discover card, check them out.  I couldn’t be happier with mine!

This is my entry into the ShopDiscover gift card giveaway promo. Yes, I am trying to win something. No, I didn’t make anything up in order to do it. Promise.
